Significant Quotes

The following are significant quotes from The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien:

“Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark… made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his on the grass and put it back into its sheath.”

This quote shows when Bilbo starts to see his inner strength and power.

“There is more in you of good than you know, child of kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

The final thoughts of Thorin on Bilbo before he died. He is saying that he is very smart and courageous. Not too much of either. He says the world would be a better place if more people were like him.

“My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!”

Shows how confident Smaug is and how hard it will be to kill him.

“A bow without hinges key or lid yet golden treasure inside is hid”

They somehow have to get in to get the gold

“He had never thought that the dwarves would actually dare to approach Smaug, but believed they were frauds who would sooner or later, be discovered and be turned out.”

He didn’t believe that the dwarves would actually confront Smaug.
